May Flowers

......we better get some after all these dang showers!!

With this being our first house, we're just cutting our teeth on how to take care of it. Thankfully my mom and Joel's dad are both really, really handy gardeners - so we're learning from the experts.

The first order of business was to chop down this eyesore of a bush.

Well, actually, the first, first order of business was to get the exterior door painted black. When we first moved in, and all through the winter (Since it was too cold to paint), I was working with a tough orangy-red cracked door.

Finally, April arrived and I was able to get the door painted.

The tree was overgrown and dying, so Joel's dad finally chopped it down and it made such a difference.

My mom and I are going to add some smaller bushes and flowers in the coming week, but in the interim, my mom helped me get my planters filled.

And now that the tree is gone, you can actually see them!

I've got a long way to go, but my mom assures me that I'll soon become addicted.

Now, here's hoping I can keep these plants alive!

  1. Wow those two things made such a huge difference! Your planters look amazing! I haven't planted a single flower since Molly Anne was born.........

  2. I love the look of your planters!

I do not have a green thumb AT ALL. The most I'll do for our house, is take out weeds, cut them back, or re-mulch what we have. Ryan planted everything, and thankfully they're still alive. lol But when it comes to planters, I totally buy ones pre-made. Because I don't really want to do it myself. lol Plus when it comes down to it cost wise, it is cheaper for us to buy them that way. I did it for the first time last year and was SO excited that they lasted through the summer - if that tells you anything. ;)

  3. Looks AMAZING!!!!! Love the changes you've made. PS: Where did you get your planters? I'm in the market for some for our front steps and I cannot for the life of me figure out where to go for some stylish ones! :)

    1. ah!!! Thank you! It's been fun. The planters are from a local garden center. The good ones are pricey though, much more than I expected! Actually, all things garden have been more expensive than I anticipated.....a small fortune has been spent at Home Depot each weekend it seems!

  4. This is looking so, so good! What a huge difference removing the tree made! This will be our third summer in our house, and I'm finally ready to commit to landscaping. The previous owners had a decent amount planted but it was all very... random. And kind of tropical-looking, which really sticks out next to a traditional home in New England ha. So last summer (thanks to pregnancy hormones), I instructed Brian to rip out EVERYTHING that we didn't love, and we're starting from scratch. It's exciting but also daunting, and expensive - who knew flowers and bushes were so dang pricey?! Can't wait to see the changes you make :)
