I've only been a "true" adult (paying own bills, working 8 to 5, living on my own, etc.) for about 7 months, but I'm having a hard time finding balance in my life.

Is this something all adults face?

I feel like the work week whips by while I'm trying to fit in work, exercise, cooking, cleaning, relaxing, sleeping, etc.

Then the weekend comes and I try to jam in partying, eating out, seeing friends, going out with Joel, visiting family, running errands, etc.

Even though I'm doing a pretty good job of managing all of this, I'm starting to get overwhelmed by it all.

Quite honestly, I feel like my life is a spinning carousel ride that I can't keep up with.

How do you do everything and enjoy it? I'm struggling with finding contentment in my life because I feel so busy trying to keep all of my many balls in the air - I can't even keep up with my own life!

And I don't even have kids! How do mom's do it?

Even more intriguing of a question, how does a  woman have an 8 to 5 job AND have kids?

I need things to just slow down, and for there to be an 8th day of the week.

That isn't asking too much, right?

  1. Oh my gosh, I say that all the time! How DO moms do it??? I feel like it takes all my energy just to work and maintain a household for TWO people! I'd take an 8th day of the week, too. Who can we talk to about that?

  2. It is really hard. I am still lobbying for a three day weekend every weekend. 3/4 seems like a much more equitable split that 2/5!

To enjoy my weekends more I use my lunch hours to run errands-grocery shop, Target runs, etc. It frees up a few hours on the weekend so I have more time with my family.

When it comes to moms, the answer I always hear is "you figure it out." Maybe they don't go to Target as often.

  3. Story of my life girl! Between working 30-35 hours a week, taking 4 grad school courses, volunteering, trying to have a social life in a new city, keeping in contact with old friends, AND trying to figure out my future plans after graduation my life is OUTTA CONTROL!

Honestly, I think this is what being an adult is. I think our generation has been so blessed with the luxury of being able to get an education for 4 years after high school in an environment that is labeled "the time of your life" reality comes as a bit of a shock to us when its time to get out in the real world.

Unfortunately the hard part about becoming an adult is trying to find that balance and that may involve reevaluating your priorities. I know since I moved to Portland I have had to put having a social life at the bottom of my "to-do" list and I think that that is just the way it is going to have to be for the next year. I am sure you will definitely find your way, it just takes time. Until then I have 3 words....LOTS OF COFFEE!!

  4. Ugh I know exactly how you feel. Definitely not enough hours in the day, or days in the week!

  5. Thanks you guys. Misery (really) enjoys company!

and Erin - my mom said the same thing about running errands at lunch time. I started doing that last week and already feel like I'm crossing a lot more off my to-do list than normal.

And I'm with Annie...bring on the coffee!
